At some point in childhood, you drew a line. On one side: "me." On the other: "not-me." That distinction — one of the first you ever made — became the enclosure you've been living inside ever since.
This is not to say the self isn't real. The pattern is real. The enclosure is real. But the enclosure is something you made — through experience, through relationships, through culture. And like any pattern, it can shift.
Here is the central problem of psychology, stated in pattern terms:
We mistake patterns for things.
When a pattern of attention scans the environment for threat, we call it "anxiety" — as if it were a little gremlin inside the head. When a pattern of thought loops on the same input, we call it "overthinking" — as if it were a character flaw. When a pattern of relation merges with whoever is nearby, we call it "codependency" — as if it were an identity.
None of these are things. They are verbs — motions the system learned to perform because they were adaptive at some point. They are not who you are. They are what the system is doing.
An emotion is not a mysterious force. It's a pattern signal:

Emotions are not problems. They're information — pattern information about the relationship between the system and its environment. The problem is when we treat the signal as the thing itself.
A habit is just a pattern that stabilized. You can't "break" a habit the way you break a thing — you can only reorganize the pattern. New marks. New enclosures. New conditions that make the old pattern less stable and a new pattern more stable.
This is why willpower fails. Willpower is Forcing — linear pressure on a pattern. Patterns don't respond to Force. They respond to Tilting — changing the conditions so the pattern reorganizes on its own.
You are not your thoughts. You are not your emotions. You are not your habits. You are the system that notices the patterns. The patterns are real. They have reasons. They stabilized for good cause. But they are not you. They are verbs — and verbs can change their tense.
